Job Description:

About Us

At EXPLO, we inspire curiosity. We fuel passion for learning and cultivate wonder. Imagine a program where the traditional concept of learning is turned on its head, where experiments take the place of lectures, and where failure is just another word for trying. EXPLO is a place where you'll spend your days surrounded by people who will inspire and challenge your worldview. Located within arm's reach of Boston, the Exploration Center has become a destination for teachers, premier graduate schools, students, and education leaders from around the world seeking to innovate their approaches to student-driven teaching and learning.

From the time we were founded in 1976 as a non-profit startup out of MIT, EXPLO has benefitted from decades of entrepreneurial leadership since day one. For us, every breath is cause for inspiration, and every idea is a challenge with which to captivate our students. EXPLO is about changing hearts and minds to create a world in which young people can take charge of their own learning and chart a course that allows them to do far more than just succeed in life - it allows them to thrive. If you are looking to join a collaborative team serving this ever-important mission, then EXPLO is the place for you!

EXPLO is an equal opportunity employer. We have a clear vision: to be an organization that attracts a diverse mix of talented people to come and do their best work. We are building a team that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. How do we put that into action? See how at:

Join us for career training and development, an exceptional work environment, a sense of family and community, and allow us to reward you for your accomplishments. While our compensation is competitive, our benefits are generous and include health insurance, dental insurance, 403(b), paid vacation time, paid holiday, employee discounts and more!

Our Headquarters

Our head office is quite the place too. It is located in Norwood, MA, a short commute from Boston, MA. Conveniently located off of route 95 and within walking distance of the MBTA commuter rail and bus, our head office is unlike any other. We renovated the once elegant Norwood Press building, the first academic press in the U.S. and brought it back to life. Now known as The Exploration Center, we retained the architectural details, like the exposed brick, and you'll find this light-filled place a warm and welcoming hub of innovation and creativity. We are regularly hosting educators from across the world. We are always working on projects: building out a room-sized diorama of the surface of Mars to use for our Mars Rover course, or using our video studio to film a press conference on breaking news coming from the U.S. State Department for a foreign affairs course, or setting up a race track for the prototypes of our self-driving cars for an engineering course. Spend your lunch break working on your own private project in our woodshop or maker space or just kick back on our private tree lined outdoor patio. Hop on one of our bikes (we have our own fleet) and take a short ride into downtown Norwood to go to the farmer's market or to run errands. Or you may want to play ball with one of the dogs that come to work. (Yes, we're a doggie friendly place.) We have regular potlucks, bakeoffs, and we like to play because it clears our heads and connects us to others and we have the space to do so.

The Role

EXPLO has an opportunity for an ambitious, analytical, self-motivated and results-driven Assistant Controller to work with the Business Manager to maintain the day-to-day operations of EXPLO's Accounting Department. We look forward to having your extensive knowledge of accounting principles to maintain a documented system of policies and procedures as well as maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk. You will collaborate with the Business Manager to assist in the annual budget and forecasts as well as analyze and report significant budget differences. Your attention to detail will be sharp as you maintain the general ledger and prepare spreadsheets. Your organizational skills will be critical with accounts payables and receivables. Through collaboration with the Business Manager, you will serve as a backup in processing and auditing payroll, and eventually take over the process.

We want your time at EXPLO to be transformative. We pride ourselves on providing a clear career path with opportunities for leadership, personal growth and professional development.
