Job Description:

You will be responsible for reviewing articles and testimonies, and editing those selected for publication in the print and online editions of The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and the Herald of Christian Science. You will also support The Christian Science Monitor's Christian Science Perspective column, as outlined below. It is expected that you will be flexible, work collaboratively, and be able to turn around editing and writing assignments quickly. You may also be asked to write features and columns, or to record podcasts. You need to stay alert to the topics in public thought, including some of the deeper challenges of faith in today's culture, and cultivate individuals to write articles and testimonies on those subjects. You will work with authors during the editing process or as authors revise their articles so that each piece maintains the author's individual voice while at the same time presenting Christian Science in accessible language for the seeker, whether a Christian Scientist or not. You need to be familiar with our worldwide movement and bring cultural sensitivity to the editing work. You will need to maintain a standard of excellence while editing a high volume of manuscripts and ensure that Mary Baker Eddy's purpose for the periodicals is evident in their content. For this reason, it is expected that you will have an active practice of Christian Science. Membership in The Mother Church and Primary Class instruction required. -ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Edits at least 5-6 pieces per month (could include articles, testimonies, original podcasts, podcast adaptations, or equivalent assigned projects).
  • Meets regular time sensitive publication and product deadlines.
  • Reads and evaluates manuscript submissions to determine suitability for the Christian Science magazines.
  • Edits accepted manuscripts, working with authors after edits are made, or after the author makes revisions.
  • Cultivates awareness of a world-wide audience, including Christian Scientists, unpacking terminology and eliminating confusing language that assumes acquaintance with Christian Science.
  • Makes sure that metaphysics are clear, accurate, and accessible and that all factual information has backup.
  • Communicates to authors why edits are needed in a way that enhances unity, mutual support, and encourages further writing.
  • Writes articles for the periodicals at least twice a year. Conducts interviews and shapes the results into finished text.
  • Takes on other editorial duties as requested by the Editor.
  • Supports the Monitor's Christian Science Perspective column:
    • Executes daily production tasks.
    • Periodically evaluates and edits submissions.
    • Serves as backup for running the column (this is the incumbent's primary responsibility when this need arises) - including content selection, submission review, editing, communications with authors, and production tasks.STAFF MANAGEMENT AND JOB CONTACTSReporting RelationshipsSupervision: Associate Editor, JSH EditorialJOB REQUIREMENTSEducation / ExperienceThis position requires a Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent in experience. Prefer four or more years of professional experience in editing and writing, or an equivalent experience in a comparable field.Knowledge / SkillsThe staff editor must be deeply familiar with the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings to ensure that Christian Science is correctly presented in articles.The candidate must have a solid understanding of literary English and its structure. This position requires a demonstrated excellence in writing and editing skills.Knowledge of business office computer operations and content management systems.Preference for onsite work in Boston, but may possibly work remotely with periodic visits to the Boston office as needed. -Engagement with Christian ScienceMembership in The Mother Church and Primary Class instruction required.
