Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe's growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries. The Protein Engineering Team works to address the complex challenges of enzyme discovery, characterization, and engineering. We utilize state-of-the-art computational software developed at Ginkgo to discover novel enzymes and employ cutting-edge software (such as Rosetta) for rationally designing improvements. As a Computational Protein Engineer, you'll help to develop an in silico platform for rational design and apply cutting-edge technologies to solve complex enzyme engineering issues. By building software to design and analyze large experimental datasets, your role will be critical to supporting Ginkgo's ultra high-throughput protein engineering pipelines. We're looking for someone who is excited about the promise of synthetic biology and the premier role of biomolecular engineering in biology by design. If you sleep not only to maintain healthy levels of protein in the brain, but also because you inevitably dream of dynamical proteins dancing in conformational ensembles, then you are at the right place. Responsibilities

• Develop and implement computational pipelines for enzyme engineering using structural (e.g. Rosetta, PyRosetta) and/or sequence-based approaches.
• Apply rational protein engineering strategies to construct libraries for high-throughput experimental characterization, including display technologies.
• Streamline analyses of large datasets to discover structure/sequence-function-relationships
• Actively engage in interdisciplinary research and collaboration between scientists, who may speak somewhat different scientific languages, but all share a common passion for synthetic biology. Desired Experience and Capabilities
  • PhD or equivalent in molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, biophysics, physics, computer science, computational biology, quantitative biology, or related field
  • Expertise with at least one software programming language (Python is preferred), with familiarity of best practices for collaborative software development
  • Significant hands-on technical experience with at least one type of molecular modeling software such as Rosetta, Molecular Operating Environment (MOE), and/or Schrodinger
  • Strong familiarity with applying machine learning algorithms to model data and learn functional relationships--
  • Enthusiasm to learn new techniques and strong curiosity of areas of biology previously unknown to you
