In this role you are responsible for developing the packaging for our photonic system-on-chip, control electronics, and optical trains. As a member of a multi-disciplinary product development team, you own the packaging development from concept to production readiness. Your packaging designs are not limited to the standard "goldbox" approach but also include novel low-cost solutions tailored towards specific application needs.Role responsibilities:

  • Develop packaging strategies for integration of PIC, electronics and optics in sub-assemblies and modules
  • Coordinate with the internal manufacturing site as well as contract manufacturers to leverage equipment capabilities and ensure DFM
  • Design the assembly flow and work with MCAD engineers to establish tolerance analysis and assembly drawings
  • Support the design optimization and material selection for good thermal management
  • Work closely with reliability engineers to meet quality and reliability requirements
  • Support benchmarking and selection of new assembly equipment
  • Tracking of industry developments and standards in opto-electronic packagingRequired / Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
    • The perfect candidate has an MSc/BSc degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or a related field
    • A PhD would be of benefit
    • A minimum of 10 years work experience in opto-electronic packaging development
    • Experience with assembly equipment and processes, including die bonding, wire bonding, flip-chip, epoxy dispense, curing, soldering, laser welding, etc.
    • Experience with design for near and full hermeticity and familiar with leak testing methods
    • Very good understanding of epoxy types and their properties relevant for packaging, such as (thermal) conductivity, outgassing, curing requirements, shrinkage
    • Knowledge of thermal interface materials and their application
    • Excellent communication skills and experience with technical guidance of co-workers
    • Experience with optical transceivers is preferred
