Job Description:

Brown and Caldwell is looking for an Entry-Level Solid Waste Engineer to join our Andover, MA office as a member of our Site Investigation, Remediation, and Solid Waste Service Line. The successful candidate will work on a broad spectrum of projects ranging from studies to environmental investigations, and design for solid waste management and recycling facilities and waste disposal facilities.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a growth-oriented professional consulting firm with multiple offices throughout the U.S. Candidate will work with and be mentored by strong, nationally recognized, senior technical staff on a variety of projects. Our ideal candidate will have strong verbal/written communication skills and be a highly organized problem solver. The ideal candidate must be capable of working in a diverse team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities. Some travel is required.

Detailed Description:

In this role, you will assist with the investigation, compliance, design, and permitting work while providing field task-level and project-level support within our environmental practice. Office work may include preparing work plans, reports, permit applications, figures, maps, design drawings, engineering calculations, technical specifications, and summarizing/interpreting various field and analytical data.

Field work may include on-site observation and documentation of construction and environmental investigation activities such as test pitting, conducting walking reconnaissance of sites, environmental sampling, and construction observation, in addition to compliance audits at solid waste facilities.

You will also support other groups within Brown and Caldwell in collecting samples for field and laboratory analysis, as well as compile and record testing and operational data for review and further analysis. Other responsibilities may include oversight of drilling operations, including installation of soil borings, installation of monitoring wells, installation of vapor probes, collection and field classification of soil and rock samples, and conducting various field tests. Other fieldwork may include groundwater, surface water, and soil sampling, water-level measurements, and landfill gas monitoring.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with Project Managers to execute work involving civil and environmental principles
  • Develop and prepare technical specifications, detailed design drawings, work plans, and reports, perform construction submittal reviews, and engineering calculations, and prepare models and other technical deliverables for solid waste and environmental-related projects.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to prepare, modify, and revise work plans, reports, and designs
  • Work closely with the project team in planning and/or design alternatives and design and engineering studies
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate with project teams including other disciplines (drafters, designers, and other engineers)
  • Provide consultation in specialized areas to make decisions and solve problems
  • Assist with business development pursuits as requested Desired Skills and Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, or related) required
    • Candidate should either have an EIT or be willing/able to obtain an EIT in the near term
    • 0 to 3 years of professional experience preferred
    • Good technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts both visually and contextually are essential
    • Strong verbal/written communication skills and ability to work well independently and in team environments
    • Candidate must be willing and able to travel for daily and short-term field assignments
    • Possess 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification with a current 8-hour refresher or have the ability to take and pass the training/physical
    • Must be willing to work in the field and able to perform physical work (see requirements below)
    • Valid driver's license and good driving record
    • Ability to work independently while maintaining a strong focus on health and safety, quality, and schedule.
    • Ability to work for short periods of time in hot and cold weather (occasionally extreme conditions)
    • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment at sites including hard hats, steel-toed boots (or other approved toe protection), safety glasses, safety vests, respirators, etc.
    • Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting field conditions or critical construction operations
    • Ability to walk slowly around sites of varying size that may have areas of uneven, muddy, and/or rocky ground to perform inspections and take photographs
    • Ability to lift objects less than 30 pounds
    • Ability to remain alert and vigilant while working around construction equipment and be able to walk swiftly for a short distance to clear an area where a potential hazard is identified
    • Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24 feet typically) to access structures for visual inspection

      Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending on skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

      Location B: $61,000 - $82,000
