Job Description:
Bridge Engineer / Fair Dermody Consulting Engineers / Portland,
Maine
Fair Dermody Consulting Engineers (FDCE) is hiring an experienced
Bridge Engineer to bring knowledge of bridge repair/rehabilitation
to their small but growing Maine-based firm that specializes in
railroad bridge work. While the preference is to have someone work
from their dog-friendly office in beautiful Portland, Maine, FDCE
will consider candidates from the East Coast who can work remotely
and easily travel to client sites.
Requirements of the Bridge Engineer:
BS in Civil Engineering with a structural engineering emphasis from
an ABET/EAC-accredited program.
PE License in any state.
Minimum 6 years of structural engineering experience, preferably in
railroad bridge work. Consideration will be given to candidates who
bring 6 years of experience in a combination of railroad and
highway bridge engineering.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without
the need for sponsorship. FDCE is unable to sponsor or take over
sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
Ability to perform complex analysis and design of bridge structures
(concrete, steel, timber).
Extensive knowledge of bridge rehabilitation and design
practices.
Extensive knowledge of AREMA and industry standards.
Ability to independently evaluate, select, and adapt standard
engineering techniques.
Strong experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD LT, and RISA 3D
(other structural analysis software will be accepted).
Excellent problem solving and time management skills. Strong
attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact
effectively with co-workers, clients, contractors, agencies, and
the public.
Must be willing to travel to project/work sites as necessary (less
than 15% of time expected). Work is primarily in the Eastern US and
most travel will include 1-2 overnights.
Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry objects
weighing up to 25 pounds; ability to work at heights; ability to
navigate into confined spaces as necessary.

FDCE provides a competitive total compensation package that
includes base salary, bonus, and generous contributions to your
retirement plan.
Salary range starts at $105,000. Offer will be dependent on
experience.
Annual bonus based on performance and company profit.
Retirement savings plan (SEP IRA) that has historically contributed
12-15% of the employee's salary into an account that is owned and
controlled by the employee.

insurance. Employee coverage is 100% funded by FDCE.
12 paid floating holidays to be used at the employee's

Responsibilities of the Bridge Engineer:
Manage multiple small to medium railroad bridge engineering
projects ensuring appropriate resource management to complete
projects on time and on budget.
Ability to perform on-site inspections, gather field measurements,
classify defects, and determine required repairs.
Interpret inspection reports and historic plans for scope and
repair development.
Develop project scope, schedule, budget estimates, and
proposals.
Perform design calculations for steel, concrete, and timber
railroad structures.
Effectively delegate to staff and oversee and mentor to support
their technical and professional growth and knowledge.
Assemble complete plans, technical specifications, and contract
documents for bridge design and rehabilitation projects.
Work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Maintain, improve, and develop company standards.
Maintain and develop client relationships.
Coordinate and review work performed by sub-consultants.
