Job Description:

Boston Children's Museum is seeking an outgoing and mission driven professional who thrives on building community relationships, providing resources and opportunities to children and families, has experience in managing collaborations in a multicultural setting, has established relationships or knowledge of the Greater Boston community based organizations that serves children and families, such as Boston Public Schools, Boston Family Engagement Network and Boston community, and parent playgroups. The ideal candidate has the ability to organize, develop and implement strategies that will support the Museum's mission and vision by focusing on children and family engagement within the targeted communities and facilitating their access to the Museum's resources that will support them in nurturing their children's creativity, curiosity and development of foundation skills.

The Director of Community Engagement (DCE) reporting directly to the VP of External Relations is responsible for overseeing and advancing the Museum's vision for community engagement and ensuring its understanding of family and community interests, needs and priorities. The DCE is tasked with managing and growing existing partner-based initiatives, supporting and leveraging the Museum's community focused partnerships and collaborations across other departments, and works closely with the Senior Directors of the Education and Exhibit teams to align and mobilize the critical stakeholder relationships that support the mutually beneficial needs, goal and priorities of both the community partners and the Museum.

The DCE plays a key role in managing internal and external projects as well as several grant-funded initiatives that fall within this role. The ability to listen to needs and feedback, and develop plans and strategies in work collaboratively to meet the needs of others and the Museum is critical.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Is a key external representative of the Museum and exemplifies the Museum's commitment to equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion
  • Has visibility and presence in the neighborhoods of Greater Boston, and will work with a variety of organizations serving children and families
  • Develops targeted substantive partnerships on behalf of the Museum utilizing a collaborative approach based on co-creation and family engagement models
  • Brings the voices representing community interests, needs and priorities to the Museum to inform its program and exhibit planning and implementation
  • Is a resource to colleagues to identify partnering organizations and advisors for programs, projects and exhibits
  • Develops programs and leads training and engagement sessions supporting children and families in collaboration with community partners, early child care providers, teachers, parents, librarians, etc.
  • Supports colleagues in developing and implementing best practices in family and community engagement, and establishing meaningful co-created partnerships
  • Directs the overall operation of parent engagement programs and groups
  • Oversees requests from outside organizations for Museum participation in community related activities
  • Collaborates with colleagues in grant writing and reports as required
  • Supervises one or more direct reports (TBC)
  • Manages programs, grant and project budgets as assigned Qualifications:--
    • Experience building strong relationships with parents and caregivers, and partnering with community-based organizations serving diverse populations of children, adults and families from across Boston neighborhoods and in a variety of settings
    • Experience in either a formal or informal education setting, developing and implementing programs for children age ten and under and their families
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and professionally with a range of audiences both within and outside the Museum
    • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, a supervisor, and a mentor
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Strong presentation skills
    • Fluency in another language (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese) a plus
    • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field preferred, such as education, community development, health, etc.
    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including: Word, Power Point, Excel and Outlook
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
    • Ability to work independently, pay attention to detail and meet established deadlines
    • Valid driver's license preferred

      WORKING CONDITIONS

      Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position the Director is required to speak clearly, hear and listen intently, sit, stand and walk at varying intervals. Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.Work Environment: Work environment may vary dependent upon physical location where work is performed (internally or externally). General office environment, shared common office space and equipment.Other Factors: Work schedule is Monday - Friday 9-5. Business casual dress code required. Occasional weekend and evening hours required. Work is performed both inside and outside of the Museum setting. Hours:-- FT- REGULAR SALARY, 35HRS PER WK
