Job DescriptionVertex currently operates at the forefront of rare disease scientific innovation and has successfully developed and commercialized multiple breakthrough medicines for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). In addition to clinical development programs in CF, Vertex has more than a dozen ongoing research programs focused on the underlying mechanisms of other serious diseases including programs in Type 1 diabetes, hemoglobinopathies, APOL-1 Mediated Kidney Disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Pain, and Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD).In consideration of our expanding pipeline and an increasingly complex and challenging market access environment, Vertex is expanding its North America market access team within US Managed Markets. The Pipeline Access Strategy Director will lead tactics and deliverables of the overall North America Pipeline Market Access strategy lead for pipeline assets across new therapeutic areas.The individual will be accountable for leading and supporting the advanced therapy and/or small molecule North America-specific regional payer research, deliverables, messages, activities. In close collaboration with North America New Product Planning, Global Pricing & Market Access, Global Commercial Team, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Health Economics Outcomes Research, and Marketing colleagues, the individual will help to define the specific access landscape considerations and assumptions on pipeline programs to ensure goal alignment and to meet corporate objectives.The individual will also collaborate closely with Payer Marketing and other US Managed Markets teams and provide in-depth, granular view across the access spectrum on payer, distribution, reimbursement, contracting trends, competitive activity and strategy.Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The individual will be responsible for delivering impactful market access strategies and resources across products in our pipeline in late-stage development, ultimately resulting in favorable patient access.
  • Develops assigned country market access strategy plans for new product launches and line extensions, flawlessly executing payer initiatives to maintain strong market access position
  • Leads initiatives to understand, analyze and demonstrate the clinical, economic and societal value of marketed product to payers, decision-makers and influencers
  • Ensures that the market access perspective is embedded in all appropriate regional discussions.
  • Works with the Global and International teams to ensure that payer insights are embedded into global strategy, including but not limited to clinical trial design, regulatory strategy and pricing and market access strategy; with an enterprise view that prioritizes the success of Vertex globally.
  • Ensures that the market access perspective is adequately represented in all strategic cross-functional discussions; questions the status quo and influences without authority to ensure that appropriate due diligence takes place in instances where the market access / payer perspective may differ from that of other functions.
  • Conducts market access assessments and builds resources to drive early payer awareness and engagement
  • Drives new customer engagement strategy and tactics across payer accounts
  • Lead or support capability building and thought leadership projects that advance knowledge of and readiness for the rapidly evolving payer environment
  • Acts as trusted resource on payer landscape for assigned country to internal colleaguesKnowledge and Skills:
    • Direct experience across different disciplines of relevance (e.g., payer account management, payer marketing, reimbursement, pricing, market access, health economics, policy), in US and lifecycle stages (e.g., experience in launch, inline and mature brands)
    • In-depth and current understanding of US payer environment including coding, coverage and payment decision-making processes, pricing and contracting strategies, formulary management, medical benefit management, hospital value assessments, etc.
    • Excellent analytical, strategic thinking and critical thinking skills
    • Expertise in the US market access environment (e.g., payers, health systems, benefit design, health policy and reimbursement)
    • Demonstrated understanding of the drug and device development process
    • Understanding of access requirements for the hospital setting
    • Demonstrated understanding of clinical trial design and endpoints necessary to achieve access
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead cross-functional teams, influencing without direct authority, with the interpersonal skills to foster collaboration and succeed in a highly matrixed environment.
    • Experiencing managing people.
    • Ability to translate clinical data into economic messages
    • Able to perform in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and work effectively across cross-functional teams
    • Prior consulting or payer experience preferred.Education and Experience:
      • Bachelor's degree in relevant field (advanced degree preferred)
