Job Description:

The Marketing Manager serves as the go-to marketing resource and is primarily responsible for building the firm's brand in the Boston marketplace. In conjunction with the Director of US Marketing Programs and office leaders, s/he plans and implements a range of marketing and business development initiatives aimed at raising the profile of the Firm and enabling Sidley lawyers to build client relationships and win new business. This role requires developing strong and effective working relationships with the lawyers in the office, within the Marketing Department and with other administrative staff throughout the firm. The manager will use marketing experience and practice development opportunities to grow the platform and visibility of the firm in the Boston market.

  • Leverage market and competitive intelligence, as well as best practices, to recommend and implement marketing and business development solutions. This includes refining existing programs and establishing new initiatives such as community involvement, event programs, pro bono activities and other activities aligned with the business goals of the office.
  • Identify and facilitate cross-selling and teaming opportunities for the Boston-based lawyers with their partners across the firm.
  • Stay abreast of, and keep the lawyers apprised of, new developments, trends, tools and solutions in the legal industry.
  • Plan and manage firm-sponsored programs for clients and prospective clients; oversee all event logistics, including contract negotiation, invitations, mailing lists, handout materials, onsite management, speakers, visual presentations and follow-up with attendees.
  • Develop, manage and monitor marketing budget(s) for the office, including evaluating the return on investment (ROI) of initiatives; initiate, collect and analyze feedback surveys as well as regularly track social media analytics and use this information to further develop and drive the office and its lawyers' social media exposure.
  • Manage the office's use of Interaction, the firm's CRM system; lead implementation, training and maintenance of Interaction in the office and leverage the system to connect lawyers, clients and other contacts to regional and national practice development initiatives and other client-facing programs.
  • Lead the development and submission of directory rankings, awards and surveys to raise the profile of the Boston lawyers and practices, coordinating with global practice group liaisons.
  • Work with the lawyers, global practice liaisons and marketing communications team on drafting, editing and maintaining external communications and collateral materials, including lawyer biographies, Sidley Updates, advertisements, invitations, website pages and social media content.
  • Collaborate with business development colleagues in the development of winning/tailored pitches, presentations, and RFP responses.
  • Identify and drive strategic speaking and authorship opportunities with professional and trade organizations.
  • Onboard and integrate lateral lawyer arrivals to the office, including face-to-face interaction with lawyers and other senior-level executives within the firm.
  • Provide counsel and coaching to partners and associates with regard to their marketing and business development efforts.
  • Attend and contribute to office and departmental leadership meetings as needed.
  • Ensure that department and firm processes and procedures are followed, working in concert with the extended Marketing team.
  • Leverage firmwide resources, including the firm's experience management and knowledge management tools to meet the needs of lawyers and practices in the office.

    • A minimum of eight (8) years of marketing or business development experience in law firms or other professional services industry
    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably in marketing, communication, business or related field
    • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and priorities and take initiative to lead projects
    • Demonstrated computer experience: MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel Preferred:
      • Advanced degree in a related area, such as marketing, law, business or communications
