GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Responsibilities encompass the daily routine operations of the Core
Hematology Laboratory; immediate supervision of Hematology
Technologists; coordination of work to provide service on assigned
shift; monitoring of test procedures and test results to ensure
conformance to laboratory quality control criteria and
hospital/department policies and procedures. Confers with hospital
staff on patients regarding any concerns they might have. Ensures
that the space in Core Hematology is consistently maintained in a
hygienically safe and functional condition; recordkeeping and
submission of reports as required by the Technical Director;
functioning as one of the principle hematology technologists.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides immediate supervision to technical staff and assures
accomplishment of routine laboratory functions; may assist in
scheduling work hours and arranging for adequate coverage on
assigned shift. Assigns, reviews, and checks work for completeness,
accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards.
Provides input to supervisors regarding employee performance,
recommending and taking corrective action, as appropriate; resolves
routine employee problems.
- Oversees all quality control procedures. Performs routine
controls on instruments. Performs crossover studies (lot to lot
reagent/control changes). Performs quality surveillance and checks
initial competencies of Core Hematology Technologists. Provides
initial and continuing technical training to medical technologists
in the different areas of the Core Hematology Lab. Provides
additional technical training to residents, students, as necessary.
Maintains all records for quality assurance and OSHA standards.
Performs routine maintenance on instruments and troubleshoots
instrument malfunctions. Performs special projects and helps with
new instrument evaluations, as required.
- Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous
material) policies and procedures. Notifies supervisor of unsafe
conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and
competency activities. Recommends appropriate policy and procedures
to ensure a safe working environment. Responds to and resolves all
unsafe conditions.
- Assists technologists with more difficult analyses, interprets
results, and performs unusual or complicated tests. Performs
special tests and/or stains when required.
- Operates computer terminal to enter and retrieve pertinent
laboratory reports; corrects inaccurate laboratory data.
Troubleshoots any problems that may arise with computer program.
Performs minor maintenance on computer terminals, as necessary;
notifies the Computer Help Desk of major malfunctions or
problems.
- Maintains close liaison with other laboratory sections and
hospital staff to provide coordination of activities which affect
patient care. Functions as resource person for medical and nursing
staff in regard to diagnostic testing.
- Interprets abnormal results and guides techs as to which tests
should be performed next.
- Maintains equipment and work area in safe and functional
condition at all times.
- Prioritizes laboratory work in accordance with
hospital/department requirements.
- Independently performs special procedures in Special
Hematology.
- Attends workshops and seminars to update knowledge of both
technical and managerial topics.
- Assists lab leadership with:
- Orientation, competency assessment and training of new
personnel in all lab areas
- Lab policy/procedure updates
- New test/technology/LIS validations and upgrades
- Shift assignments and/or staffing schedules
- Implementation of changes to meet regulatory compliance
- Report all issues and QC failures to Supervisor, as
appropriate.
- Addresses all service complaints from all customers, patients,
medical and lab staff; work with lab leadership to formulate
appropriate response.
- Performs bench testing up to 80% of the time.
- Responsible for lab startup on each shift. Responsible for
sending peer QC data and other ILQC results for evaluation.
Functions as acting supervisor on weekend, holiday, night and
evening shifts when no supervisor is on site.
- Recommends updates in reviewing/editing the laboratory
procedure manual.
- Responsible for clinical results of all age groups. SKILLS/
ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology

WORKING CONDITIONS
May be exposed to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or
fumes, other hazards normally associated in a clinical laboratory
setting. Work environment may be noisy or crowded.
Capable of physical exertion, including walking, standing, sitting
and bending and lifting up to 40 pounds
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
May provide daily supervision for up to 6-8 technologists/CLAs.
Acting weekend, night and evening shift supervisor.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Needs to conserve expendable resources and supplies wherever
possible.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Science
or chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited
collect and
- Active national general certification or categorical
certification in a relevant specialty and
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in high complexity
testing OR
- MT2 at MGH and
- Active national general certification or categorical
certification in a relevant specialty and
- Total of two consecutive years of performance that meet
expectations with 1 year at the MT2 level and
- Twenty-four hours of documented continuing education in
previous two years according to lab-specific policy
