Summary The Staff Sonographer performs a variety of routine and
complex diagnostic ultrasound examinations using high frequency
sound waves to provide clinically relevant information for
diagnosis and treatment. The role requires advanced technical skill
to optimize images, identify appropriate acoustic windows, and
tailor each exam to patient anatomy and the clinical indication,
distinguishing normal from abnormal findings while following
department protocols. Key Responsibilities Perform diagnostic
ultrasound exams and related modalities independently, under
physician supervision, and in collaboration with peers, in
accordance with departmental protocols and professional standards.
Prepare patients for exams by verifying identity, reviewing
history, explaining procedures, obtaining consent as required, and
positioning patients to obtain optimal images. Customize
examinations based on patient condition, clinical question, and
real time sonographic findings; acquire additional images when
pathology or variants are identified. Optimize equipment settings
(e.g., depth, gain, focus, Doppler parameters) to ensure high
quality, diagnostic images. Recognize and document normal and
abnormal anatomy and pathology, and communicate urgent or
unexpected findings to the interpreting physician according to
policy. Operate PACS and related imaging/IT systems, ensuring
accurate labeling, documentation, and timely transfer of studies
for interpretation. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work
environment; clean and inspect ultrasound equipment and
accessories, and report malfunctions or safety issues promptly.
Adhere to infection control practices, safety policies, and
regulatory standards while promoting patient comfort, privacy, and
dignity. Participate in quality assurance/quality improvement
activities to ensure exams meet departmental quality standards
before release for interpretation. Collaborate with radiologists,
nursing, and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient
care, exam prioritization, and workflow. Provide patient centered
care on a night shift schedule, triaging and managing stat,
inpatient, ED, and other urgent requests as needed. Minimum
Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited diagnostic
medical sonography or ultrasound program. Experience: Previous
ultrasound experience preferred; new graduates with strong clinical
training may be considered. Certification: Registry eligible or
registered diagnostic medical sonographer (e.g., ARDMS, CCI) in
applicable specialty area(s), per department requirements. Current
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Skills: Proficiency in
performing routine and complex exams, strong anatomy/pathology
knowledge, effective communication, and the ability to work
independently on nights. Job Type Full time, night shift
