Candidate will be in charge of General, vascular GI, plastics, ortho, bariatrics Surgical areas. Candidate will have option to work 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts. No mandatory weekends, we have moonlighters. It is part of the Chief's role though to make sure there is adequate coverage. No On-Call! The PA Program Chief will act in a clinical and leadership role for a talented team of Physician Assistants at the Medical Center. This person is responsible for participating in the clinical activities of the team as well as serving as the operational leader of the team under the supervision of the Chief of Surgery. Performs duties to assist the Chief of Surgery in both inpatient and outpatient duties, as well as in emergency situations, adhering to standard practices and established procedures. Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to patients in the following age groups: All ages; Neonate; Infancy; Toddler; Preschool; School age; Adolescent; Adult; Geriatric. 1. The Program Chief will be responsible for participating in the clinical activities of the Team. These duties primarily include performing surgical consults for inpatient and ER patients, performing urgent and emergent procedures (such as central venous access, and tube thoracstomy among others), and working collaboratively with hospitalists, intensivists and other medical specialists in the care of patients. Members of the Team will also serve as first assistants in the operating room for select cases. 2. Surgical PA's will perform physical examinations as directed for pre-operative clearances, post-operative care, or during rounds on their surgical service. Blood draws and placement of lines such as peripheral arterial, central access and PICC as performed as required for the hospital. Basis and advanced life support procedures are performed as situations arise. 3. Assists Physician in the operating room, arranges for transfer of patients from critical care units to stepdown beds, evaluates patients in the emergency room and arranges for admission to the hospital all under the supervision of the physician. Orders and arranges necessary diagnostic testing through hospital departments with proper physician authorization. 4. Performs rounds with or under the direction of supervising physician. Records and signs patient progress notes. Transcribes and executes specific orders at the direction of supervising physician. Compiles and records detailed narrative care summaries and other forms pertinent to patient's medical record. 5. Obtains appropriate physician authorizations required for all treatments and medication orders, written and verbal, as outlined in department protocols and procedures. Writes and signs preliminary discharge summaries and outpatient forms as allowed, including necessary medical care instructions. 6. As the Program Chief, the Physician Assistant will assist in developing policies for the Team regarding inpatients rounds, discharges, admissions as well as in developing guidelines for daily schedules and CME activities. The Program Chief will serve as the operational leader of the Team under the supervision of the Medical Director and Administrative Director and will be responsible for building the program, professional development of staff, Human Resources functions such as interviewing, performance management and training new hires to the Surgical PA Program with the support of specialty surgeons. 7. Acts as a liaison between all members of the treatment team. Attends meetings and seminars as required by Administration. Assists in in-service of students and junior residents assigned to the service. 8. Coordinates and Leads Monthly Staff meetings between Program Physician Assistants. Presents a teamwork approach to problem resolution and offers solid communication of program expectations and changes to workflow. 9. Implements efficient and productive measures in scheduling of physician assistants, workflow performance, and team roles and expectations. 10. Administrative Chief of the program with 25% of time protected for leading, supervising, organizing, and designing models and protocols that lead to team and hospital fiscal and quality success. 11. Provides clinical coverage at all hospital campuses and supports moonlighter services through shift coverage, coordination, and oversight organization of after-hours Program. 12. Creates program improvements through financial responsibility, patient and physician satisfaction focus, and expanded service offerings.
