About the Job

The Experience Design Researcher works within a User Experience (UX) Design team, comprised of researchers, strategists, service designers, and product designers. This team works with a mix of internal stakeholders, from product owners and developers to marketers and service providers, helping to unearth and define opportunity areas and arrive at solutions informed by research. The team works to ensure the right problems are being solved, and then rapidly iterates and gains perspective by testing concepts and prototypes with oncologists, advanced practitioners, clinical care teams, pathologists, patients, and investigators.

This position works with subject matter experts, strategists, and UX designers to explore and refine potential solutions to drive business outcomes that empower the people that FMI serves to achieve their goals. In addition to project work, the Experience Design Researcher also collaborates with team members to help the group work better and smarter by leveling up the Experience Design group's operational excellence. This position contributes to tools and frameworks that can be used across the team to streamline our work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with stakeholders and users to understand scenarios and workflows that are critical for a product.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders and product owners to understand the business goals for projects and how those align with user needs and eventual design responses.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to explore concepts that address user needs and business goals as they align with the product roadmap.
  • Work with product owners and designers to validate possible solutions to challenges and opportunities.
  • Test prototypes of experiences that consider a range of contexts and inputs to align product and engineering teammates.
  • Understand and build foundational knowledge of design problems and capture contextual understanding of how our users and customers function and interact with FMI products and services.
  • Support design projects as periodically assigned and aligned to quarterly planning.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 3+ years of experience supporting product/service design in a research capacity
  • Understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Ability to communicate research and insights to others

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in the social sciences (e.g., Psychology, Anthropology), Human Factors, HCI, or a related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience leading both generative user research projects and evaluative testing, with an emphasis on exploratory research and early-stage discovery
  • Experience conducting generative research leading to frameworks and personas or archetypes
  • General domain experience in the healthcare field
  • Demonstrable experience employing a variety of methods to answer targeted research questions
  • Demonstrated evidence of success working in a cross-functional environment with the ability to build strong relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and execute tasks
  • Expertise in design thinking and UX fundamentals, including strategy, research, usability, rapid iteration, and prototyping
  • Understanding of the fundamental principles of experience strategy as applicable to a software system in an agile environment
  • Familiarity and comfort running research projects from start to finish with limited guidance, including: project definition, method selection, stakeholder alignment, meeting facilitation, research planning and execution, analysis and synthesis, insights development, opportunity-framing, compelling storytelling, and follow through toward implementation to help guide design decisions
  • Comfortable handling of core principles as they apply to interface design
  • Ability to dissect problems and ask the right questions; constantly digging deeper to uncover underlying meaning
  • Ability to structure and present information/content to provide the right information to users at the right moment while also reducing cognitive load
  • Excellent observational and active listening skills
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of patient safety and data privacy regulations and guidelines
