Job Description - Public Affairs Officer (3186320) Public
Affairs Officer - ( 3186320 ) The Media Relations Officer is
responsible for responding to inquiries from the press and
initiating coverage of the MGH in the print, broadcast and internet
media. The position also involves communicating news about the work
of the hospital and its staff through creation of multimedia
content for the web and social media sites. In addition, the Media
Relations Officer will be involved in the development of videos for
the hospital website and other uses. Working closely with the
Director of Media Relations, the Media Relations Officer must be
capable of handling numerous responsibilities and media inquiries
simultaneously. The position requires strong professional skills
and the ability to establish priorities and work well under
pressure and tight deadlines. Also required are understanding of
and respect for sensitive issues related to patient care and
confidentiality, as well as an understanding of and appreciation
for embargoes associated with scientific publication in
peer-reviewed journals. The Media Relations Officer must be able to
work as a team member as well as independently on projects.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Media Relations Officer
responds to the many inquiries from the local, regional, national,
international and trade media that come in to the Public Affairs
Office. He or she must understand the importance of balancing the
information needs of the media while keeping the best interests and
right to privacy of patients first and foremost. The Media
Relations Officer writes news releases, obtains patient conditions,
and makes arrangements with appropriate people within the hospital
for print or electronic media coverage. He or she also is
responsible for escorting reporters, news crews and photographers
through the hospital. The Media Relations Officer works to promote
hospital initiatives, programs, and new s through digital
storytelling with heavy emphasis on video production. The Media
Relations Officer initiates media coverage about patient care,
research, teaching and community service to promote the mission of
the MGH. The Media Relations Officer is responsible for developing
contacts with employees and staff throughout the institution to
help identify news opportunities that can be initiated to the media
or included in internal publications. The Media Relations Officer
develops and maintains relationships with members of the media and
follows changes in staffing among reporters and editors who may be
involved with news and features that relate to the MGH. The Media
Relations Officer must be a good and accurate writer who
understands the importance of and is committed to meeting
deadlines. The Media Relations Officer is involved with ensuring
that the various systems for reporting media activity are
coordinated and that the information is disseminated to the
appropriate audiences. Such reports may include daily clips,
monthly media reports, video clips and special requests for clips
or information. The Media Relations Officer has a clear
understanding of embargoes, patient confidentiality, privacy and
other issues regarding the release of information. As a
communication resource to the MGH, the Media Relations Officer
works with various departments and people to determine the need for
publicity, identify the opportunities, initiate media coverage and
evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy. The Media Relations
Officer is responsible for coordinating specific projects and
special events as assigned. As appropriate, the Media Relations
Officer is involved in such areas as community relations and
special and fundraising events to help promote the MGH.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Media Relations Officer should have a
bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communication, public
relations or a related discipline along with a minimum of three
years of professional experience. Knowledge of health care issues
and experience in a health care setting are preferred. The Media
Relations Officer should have an understanding of digital
photography and video. The Media Relations Officer should be
proficient with digital editing software including Adobe Photoshop,
Final Cut Pro, and iMovie. Candidates with demonstrated video
production preferred. The Media Relations Officer should have an
understanding of social media communication and strategy across a
multitude of platforms. SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
The Media Relations Officer must have excellent verbal and written
communication skills. Strong organizational skills are essential as
is the ability to plan, coordinate and evaluate projects and
programs. Above all else, the Media Relations Officer must be
intelligent, enthusiastic, sensitive and committed to high quality
in all projects in which the Public Affairs Office is involved.
