R&D Alloy Development Scientist

Job Description:

Boston Metal is commercializing cutting edge extractive metallurgy technology that will revolutionize primary metals production by improving metal quality while decreasing cost and lowering environmental impact. This fast-paced startup company is looking for an R&D Alloy Development Scientist to join our passionate team.
The role will have primary responsibility in developing, manufacturing/casting and characterizing alloys based on properties requirement. The candidate will be an individual contributor actively leading and coordinating hands-on alloy development and testing research.
Collaboration with R&D, Engineering, Supply Chain and external vendors will be required to enable prototyping, scale up, and manufacturing activities.
Required Experience5+ years in research or engineering experience in technical environment conducting alloy design, casting, and characterization activities in support of industrial/commercial activities.
PhD Degree from accredited university or college in one or more of the following areas: Metallurgical or Materials Science Engineering, Physical Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering.Desired Experience & Skills

  • Experience in conducting alloy design research preferentially in the field of high-temperature applications.
  • Strong understanding of physical metallurgy and integrated computational materials engineering, among others phase equilibrium (experience with FactSage desirable) and microstructure prediction, and their application to alloy development approach.
  • Experience in metal/alloy casting and manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of correlation between processes, structure, and properties.
  • Expertise in microstructural and mechanical properties characterization and the required corresponding analysis techniques: SEM, EBSD, XRD, TEM, tensile test, creep testing, etc.
  • Experience in evaluating materials performance and degradation in laboratory and industrial environments.
  • Experience with high-temperature processes > 1000 -C.
  • Experience in heat treatment and thermo-mechanical processing of alloys.
  • Familiarity with metal forming processes (casting, forging, powder metallurgy, welding, plating, coating, cladding, etc.)
  • Experience in materials selection, conceptual and component design, and implementation in an industrial environment based on design objectives, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Familiarity with failure analyses to determine root cause, develop, test, and recommend solutions.

    Additional Information:You will be working in a small team environment where teamwork and good relationships with other team members is critical. We routinely wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and you should be prepared to do so as well. Boston Metal supports COVID-19 guidelines.
