Send me a copy Assistant Superintendent of Autonomous Schools (SY22-23) Job Description REPORTS TO: Chief of Schools & Accountability POSITION OVERVIEW: The Assistant Superintendent of Autonomous Schools will lead the support and coordination of autonomous schools across the district. This person will work strategically to build the capacity of autonomous school leaders and collaborate with boards who support the efforts of the district's autonomous schools. This person will be a key member of the Schools Division and will work closely with Chief of Schools & Accountability, school leaders, regional school superintendents and other district staff to develop support systems for autonomous schools and their partners. The Assistant Superintendent of Autonomous Schools will report to the Chief of Schools & Accountability. The overall goal of this position is to ensure autonomous schools have the capacity needed to operate and serve their students and communities. RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Work collaboratively with departments across the district to develop, implement and evaluate the district-wide support of autonomous schools and school leaders.
  • Focus on supporting continuous improvement across the network with explicit attention to high-quality leverage of autonomies that improve academic outcomes and opportunities . -
  • Build the capacity of autonomous school leaders to ensure they have the resources, knowledge, and skills to lead their autonomous schools.
  • Provideindividualized coaching and support for a group of autonomous school leaders based on their need.
  • Design onboarding experiences and professional learning for new school leaders in autonomous schools.
  • Collaborate with the Chief of Schools & Accountability and School Superintendents to coordinate support for autonomous schools and autonomous schools leaders.
  • Establish a system of School Quality Reviews that support school growth and fidelity to the set of autonomies implemented at each school.
  • Establish collaboration and sharing of best practices within the Autonomous Schools Network as well as with traditional district schools. Autonomous Schools Board Support
    • Create a vision for district, school, and board based collaboration across the BPS autonomous schools. -
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with each of the autonomous school boards---
    • Build an institutional knowledge system of governance boards' bylaws and procedures, and identify trends across the district
    • Partner with school leaders, governance board members, district office leaders to design and implement a professional learning scope and sequence that meets the needs and drives the practices of school based governing boards Division of Schools Leadership
      • Develop a system-wide understanding of autonomous schools and their accountability & governance structures across the district using the Autonomous Schools Manual as a key guide for best practices.
      • Bring together the resources, expertise, and development to ensure autonomous schools have the supports they need to succeed.
      • Effectively communicate in a manner that positively represents the Boston Public Schools on local, state and national media requests, professional associations, committees, boards, and panels.
      • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Senior Deputy Superintendent of Academics, and/or Chief of Schools & Accountability.
      • Work with school leaders and district departments to annually review key components of the Autonomous Schools Manual, e.g. discretionary funds, assessments, enrollment.
      • Establish working committees with school leader and district department representation to collaboratively work on key areas of continued development: e.g. Fiscal Autonomy Committee, Curriculum Committee. QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED :
        • Hold a Master's Degree in the field of Education, policy or a Related Field; -
        • Hold or be eligible to obtain a valid Massachusetts Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent license;
        • Possess a minimum of three years experience in a senior-level leadership position in an urban school district, school, or organization with expertise in establishing systems in schools and management experience in education strategy development, implementation, and systems-level thinking;
        • Demonstrate experience in culturally and linguistically responsive practices; -
        • Previous experience working with a school board, governance board, or other type of board structure
        • Experience independently designing and facilitating professional learning.
        • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across a variety of BPS constituents -
        • Ability to identify problems and resolve complex systems issues;
        • Demonstrate experience with and a strong understanding of the laws and regulations relative to public education and governance board. -
        • Demonstrate capability to work collaboratively with central office and school administrators, direct service providers, families, students, and outside partners; -
        • Ability to effectively design systems within a bureaucracy that meets the diverse needs of BPS students and families; -
        • Current authorization to work in the United States
        • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment. -
        • Excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills
        • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education. QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED :
          • Experience working in an Autonomous School with preferred experience as a school administrator -
          • Previous experience in facilitating adult learning and/or coaching educational leaders
          • BPS has a strong preference for linguistic diversity, and we believe that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
          • Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools Terms: Managerial, E91.
