Carrier Fire & Security Products is seeking an co-op for the Suppression Engineering Team at the Kidde Fenwal Fire Suppression business in Ashland, MA! Kidde Fenwal, is the world's largest manufacturer of fire safety products. For more than 90 years industry leaders, the military, airlines and firefighters have relied on Kidde Fenwal to deliver outstanding fire detection and suppression.
We are seeking a motivated, results-oriented college student to join our team for 2023. The Carrier internship experience offers interns and co-ops an environment that provides practical, challenging, and meaningful on-the-job work experience, and the opportunity to apply knowledge and demonstrate strengths in efforts to assist Carrier in achieving its business strategy.
As a Suppression Materials Chemical Engineer Intern you will gain experience to include but is not limited to activities and task listed below.
Research and development of products and systems in areas including, but not limited to investigating properties of fire extinguishing agents Including gases, vaporizing liquids, dry chemicals, aqueous solutions); storage of agents; effects of varying temperature on agent storage; agent chemistry; toxicity; environmental properties of agents; basic fire science and fire extinguishing mechanisms; fluid flow in pipes; thermodynamics of liquids and gases and vaporization. Investigating and developing test protocols for laboratory analysis to create the next generation of suppression agents.
This position reports directly to the Suppression and Value Engineering Manager, collaborating with the full spectrum of Kidde Fenwal leaders, including product management, operations, finance, sales, and marketing.
Provide technical support for the fire protection engineering team, define test plans and complete technical lab analysis.
Craft and develop physics-based performance models in support of operation of fire extinguishing systems and their components.
Perform model testing, calibration and validation based on experimental data
Advance technology at Kidde-Fire Systems related to fire extinguishing systems
Tests and qualify new materials

Ability to design and execute experiments and present technical results

Familiarity with chemistry laboratory EH&S protocols
Experience with polymer materials
Ability to work with suppliers for simple trouble-shooting for analytical instruments
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills

Self-driven and proactive
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
Ability to communicate effectively at all levels
Hands-on experience handling chemicals and performing lab experiments
Experience operating analytical instruments such as TGA/DSC, SEM/EDS, FTIR, & GC-MS
Hands-on experience with chemical analysis tools like titrators
Must be currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree program, majoring in in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering

GPA must be greater than or equal to 3.0 GPA

Relevant coursework or previous internships preferred
